Home for the Holidays? Talk to your friends and family about defeating the anti-marriage amendment!

One of the most important things you can do during the Holidays!

AFSCME Council 5 leadership has stated that all Minnesotans should have "The right to bargain collectively, earn a decent income, retire with dignity, live in a safe community, immigrate without discrimination, vote without barriers and marry whomever they choose."

Election Day 2012 may seem far away, but we have to start talking about it now in order to defeat the anti-marriage amendment in November. The amendment will ask voters to choose yes or no – marriage should be defined as between one man and one woman. Council 5 urges all members to VOTE NO. Why? This is a CIVIL RIGHTS issue – there are hundreds of state and federal laws that exclude gay and lesbian people from equal protections under the law. This is a HUMAN RIGHTS issue – love is love is love, it’s just that simple. This is a DISCRIMINATION issue- our State Constitution has never before been used to limit the rights of a particular group of people. This is an EQUALITY issue - everyone deserves equal treatment under the law.  This is a SOLIDARITY issue – an injury to one is an injury to all.

During the Holiday season you may find yourself gathering with people you don’t see very often. Please talk to them about why defeating the constitutional amendment is important to you. Talk to them about why marriage matters to you. Talk to them about why discrimination hurts. Talk to them about why equality is important. Changing hearts and minds takes time, so it’s never too early to start!

The organization leading the campaign against the anti-marriage amendment is Minnesotans United for All Families. They have created a toolkit with Holiday Conversation Starters (http://mnunited.org/holidayconvokit.pdf) and a fact sheet on marriage. Please download it, print it, and share it with your friends and family. One of the most important things you can do toward defeating the amendment is talking to people about why marriage matters. Together, we can do it!
